White Coat Syndrome?

We have all heard of the ‘White Coat Syndrome’ where we go see the doctor, have our blood pressure taken by the doctor and the doctor discovers elevated blood pressure. This is extremely common and can be due simply to anxiety. There is often not a lot of time to relax before the doctor takes our blood pressure and we often are talking just before our blood pressure is taken (talking raises blood pressure). So, what to do?

Having a blood pressure chart that reflects the results of home blood pressure monitoring over time is a good start. Taking a few minutes to relax before you see the doctor can be helpful.

Some of the best advice we have seen recently was actually written by two physicians who addressed this problem. They acknowledged that the ‘White Coat Syndrome’ is real but not the end of the story. They feel that if elevated blood pressure exists over time when takenĀ  in the doctor’s office that further tests should be done. If evidence of damage due to hypertension is found, then hypertensive medication is indicated. This is a refreshing change from the doctor that discounts the home chart and rushes to place patients with borderline hypertension on medication. It is a refreshing addition to the debate.
